The Kirtland Air Force Base is located in the southeast part of the Albuquerque, New Mexico urban area. It is adjacent to the Albuquerque International Sunport and is the third largest installation in Air Force Global Strike Command and sixth largest in the Air Force.

The base takes up 51,558 acres of Real Estate in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has over 23,000 employees, which include more than 3,200 part-time Reserve personnel, 1,000 Guard and 4,200 active duty. In 2000, Kirtland AFB’s economic impact on the City of Albuquerque was more than $2.7 billion.

Kirtland is the home of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, which is assigned to the Air Force Materiel Command. Its responsibilities include modernization and sustainment of nuclear system programs for both the Department of Defense and Department of Energy and acquisition.

The Sandia National Laboratories is also located in Kirtland Albuquerque, New Mexico. It occupies 8,699 acres and employs over 8,400 people. It is Sandia's mission to maintain the reliability and surety of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and non-proliferation technologies, and investigate methods for the disposal of the United States' nuclear weapons program's hazardous waste.
